Find Out More About Earl Grey (Earl Gray) Tea

Like every ageless classic, the origins of Earl Grey tea (sometimes wrongly spelled as Earl Gray tea) are shrouded in mystery. The combination was named for the Second Earl Grey, who was a British Prime Minister in the year 1830's.

Depending on several stories, the blend was presented to him by a Chinese Mandarin whose son had been saved from drowning by one of Lord Grey's men. Other records have the tea coming like a present presented to one of Lord Grey's envoys, while he was traveling in China, with orders to offer it to his Lord upon his return to England.

One more account holds that the initial formula was offered to George Charlton by Earl Grey himself. Mr. Charlton was a partner in Jackson & Co., and Jackson of Piccadilly claims that the recipe has been around in constant formation since, and it has never left their hands.

To include yet another twist to the myth of how the tea came to be, the Grey family themselves claims that the blend was made by a Chinese Mandarin for them, specifically to suit the water at Howick Hall in Northumberland (the Grey Family Seat). Bergamot was selected specifically to assist offset the high lime content in the local water supply in that location, and the blend first attained prominence since Lady Grey used it for amusing in London, and was finally asked if it could be sold to a broader market.

To facilitate this, a firm called Twinings was provided the formula, and promoted it from that point on as 'Earl Grey tea.' (note that although many sites, and even a reasonable number of printed materials list it as 'Earl Gray Tea' there is no brand name having that specific spelling. This is mostly a function of slight differences amongst the Queen's English and American English).

Whichever of these tales is ultimately right (and it's quite possible that all of them contain certain vital truths), something that can be fairly stated is that Earl Grey tea, by whichever spelling, is possibly the best known of the English teas, at least on the international stage. There happen to be countless referrals to it in books, movies, and TV series over time, and its exclusive flavor makes it hard to forget!

The phrase "global village" is perhaps overused, but not, I think, without reason. Technological advances truly have shrunk the globe, and it is not at all uncommon to find citizens of one country living and working in another.
