The two cities share a common border and collectively are almost always called Kitchener-Waterloo or K-W.

The city of Cambridge is found in the south eastern part of the region and has a population of just over 120,000. Cambridge came into existence in 1973 by the merging of the municipalities of Galt, Preston, Hespeler and Blair. Many local people resisted this amalgamation, considering it a "shotgun marriage" pushed on them by the Ontario provincial government.

Today Waterloo Region is one of the most vibrant and fastest growing areas in Canada because it has some of the best agricultural land in Ontario, two highly regarded Universities, a strong financial industry, diversified industrial production and a burgeoning high tech sector centered around Research in Motion and numerous spinoff companies from the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University.

People moving into the Region will find many varied employment opportunities, an exciting and varied cultural life, and unmatched educational facilities. K-W real estate is also quite a bit less expensive than similar properties in other Ontario cities such as Toronto.

Indeed, people living in Waterloo Region have the best of both worlds. They have the more friendly and pleasant atmosphere found in a smaller urban centre along with the considerable amenities of larger cities such as Toronto, Mississauga, London and Detroit.
